One of my favourite blogs to read every now and again is Like Mother Like Daughter. It is fabulous for everything from recipes to everyday wisdom. The other day, I was reading an older post from a few ‘new years’ ago… And I found some excellent wisdom for approaching the new year…
Do better in the minimum anyone can expect from you, and you will do better in everything else.
This is advice aimed at home-making mums, but I think it is advice that works for just about anyone with a busy life. I find that so many people in my life – family, friends, friends from church, others I know – seem to be constantly running around after ourselves, barely able to fit everything in. It is a relief to have a break from this running-around over Christmas, and to ignore emails for once. But, coming back in January can be somewhat daunting…
So, the advice is: If you are trying to keep your head above water, make sure you have order and systems in place to take care of the absolute basics, and everything else will eventually fit into place. (If it doesn’t, and you’re perpetually running around like a headless chicken, something will have to give…) “The minimum anyone can expect from you” – whether that is at work, at home, or in other areas – is not everything that is necessary, it’s a minimum. But if we at least get this in order, if we do at least this well, then eventually we will be doing other things well too.
It’s also lovely to share with you that the twelve people who have been coming to our enquiry sessions took part in the Rite of Acceptance this morning… Here’s a pic, with their wonderful sponsors, and some catechists. The Catechumenate begins this week… keep them in your prayers!
